Titans Cool Off Panthers

Kostowicz, Howard post career efforts in the loss

MILWAUKEE – Senior Sydney Howard and freshman Steph Kostowicz both had career nights in a hard-luck loss for the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee women's basketball team, falling to Detroit 60-56 Wednesday evening from the Klotsche Center.

Howard started the night off with the hot hand, finishing with a career-high 17 points. Kostowicz had a monster night, pouring a career-high 18 points while grabbing 13 rebounds – also a career best.

Jaleesa Armstrong just missed double digits, registering nine points to go with her game-high five assists.

Detroit (12-16, 7-8 Horizon) had three players in double figures, led by sophomore Rosanna Reynolds's 20.

Milwaukee (9-18, 5-10) had a tough time getting its offense going, with its two leading scorers coming into the game finishing with just a combined 10 points.

"Credit to Detroit; they did a great job of taking away our best two scorers in Ashley (Green) and Jenny (Lindner)," Milwaukee head coach Kyle Rechlicz said. "We knew that was going to be the case – we were prepared for this and we worked all week on other people having to knock down shots and having that confidence to step in and shoot. I thought two players really stood out in that category – Sydney Howard and Steph Kostowicz. Those are the best games I've seen them have.

"They played extremely confident and Steph has not played as many games because she's been injured so for her to turn around and have a double-double is a big game for her."

Milwaukee came out of the gates hot, hitting three of its first-five attempts, with all three coming from Howard from downtown to give UWM a 9-6 lead at the first media timeout.

From there, the Panthers offense struggled to stay on track. UWM shot just 28 percent from the field in the first half as the Titans took a 32-26 lead at the break.

The Panthers came out of the locker room looking more patient and it paid off right away. A free throw by Kostowicz on an and-one play tied the game up at 34-34 and a jumper by Howard at the 15:28 mark gave Milwaukee its first lead since midway through the first half.

UWM also turned up its defensive pressure in the second half, collecting six of their nine steals after the break.

A layup by Lindner with 8:17 remaining capped an 8-0 run and gave Milwaukee its largest lead of the night at 48-41.

Detroit refused to go away, slowly chipping away at the Panther lead.

The Titans were able to go on a 10-3 run late in the contest, grabbing a 56-55 lead with just 2:29 left.

From there, the Panther offense just couldn't get back on track, scoring just one point the rest of the way.

"We did a lot of things right tonight," Rechlicz said. "We held them to 60 points, we had 19 offensive rebounds, a positive assist-to-turnover ratio; we just didn't knock down shots. When you're at home, from a coaching standpoint, you kind of predict that that's going to happen. You think your team is going to have that confidence playing in front of their home crowd and I could just see it on some of our girls' faces that the ball wasn't going to go their way tonight."

Milwaukee closes out the regular season with a trip to Dayton, taking on Wright State Saturday at 1 p.m. central from the Nutter Center.
