Panthers Sweep Phoenix To Start League Play

Milwaukee starts conference season with a statement

Green Bay, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee tennis team kicked of the 2015 Horizon League season with a bang Friday, claiming a 7-0 win over in-state rival Green Bay at the Western Racquet & Fitness Club.

"It's always great to win the first conference match of the season, especially 7-0," Milwaukee head coach Maddy Soule said. "I think this win will really motivate the team as we head into a pair of tough conference matches next weekend."

Milwaukee jumped all over GB right out of the gates, claiming all three doubles matches for the early lead. Christina Colarossi and Mardee Merar took the top spot, 6-2, with Hayley Marshall and Chelsea Bailey sweeping the No. 2 doubles spot, 6-0.

It was much of the same for UWM in singles action, with five of the six contests finishing in sweeps for the Panthers.

Marshall posted a convincing win at the No. 2 spot with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Lauren Miketinac. Merar claimed every point in a 6-0, 6-0 sweep at the No. 5 spot, while freshman Laura Kovacs posted a 6-4, 6-0 win at the sixth spot.

Battling at the No. 1 singles spot, Bailey completed the team sweep with a hard-fought win in the closest match of the day. The senior dropped the first game only to recover nicely with a 1-6, 6-0, 10-7 victory over Stephanie Londre to close things out.

The Panthers continue their road swing to start the conference season with a trip to Michigan, taking on both Oakland and Detroit next weekend starting Saturday.
