PHOENIX, Ariz. - Sophomore
Justin Langley struck out nine batters in a seven-inning 11-1 win in game one and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee baseball team scored a run in the eighth to claim a 3-2 victory over Grand Canyon University in the nightcap Saturday at Brazell Stadium.
Â
The Panthers (5-3) extended their best start in school history with a sweep of the Antelopes (9-3), bouncing back in impressive fashion after a pair of walkoff losses yesterday.
Â
"I am extremely proud of the guys in their effort today," UWM head coach
Scott Doffek said. To lose both games in walkoff fashion the way we did yesterday and then come out today with their chins up, ready to compete, is what it's all about."
Â
Langley was terrific in game one, improving to 2-0 on the season while maintaining his 0.00 ERA on the year. He fanned nine in 6.0 innings, allowing one unearned run on just four hits. He worked out of a jam early in the second and was in command from there. He now has 15 K's in just 11 innings on the season.
Â
"Langley was really good from start to finish," Doffek said. "Our hitters, up and down the lineup, put up quality at bats and the production showed it."
Â
Milwaukee dented the scoreboard for a run in the second and went ahead 3-0 in the third on the first home run of the season by senior
Sam Koenig. Senior
Mike Porcaro doubled in a run in the sixth and senior
Derek Peake made it 6-1 with a two-run single later in the frame.
Â
Milwaukee would go on to score four more in the seventh. Junior
Mitch Ghelfi led the team with three hits. Peake and Porcaro (3 runs/2RBI) each had a pair and junior
Luke Meeteer drove in three.
Â
Game two was much tighter. Milwaukee took a 2-0 lead on RBI-singles by seniors
Sam Hammer and
Ryan McShane in the second but the Antelopes scratched across single tallies in the third and fifth, tying the game on Chad De Le Guerra's home run.
Â
The Panthers plated the winning run in the eighth. Meeteer led off with a double, went to third on an errant pickoff throw and came home on a wild pitch. Senior
Cody Peterson came in for the final four outs to record his first save of the season.
Â
Sophomore
Adam Reuss got the start and allowed just one earned run through 5.0 innings of work. Seniors
Cal Haley (1.0 scoreless IP) and
Justin Jaquish (1.2 scoreless) did a great job in middle relief, with Jaquish (1-1) picking up the victory.
Â
"Game two was a quality start by Reuss and a great job by the bullpen again," Doffek said. "We scratched and clawed on offense. Their kid on the mound was really good after the second inning, but we found a way and that's what counts."
Â
Koenig (2-for-3) was the only UWM player with more than one hit and Meeteer scored his 13
th run of the season through eight games. De Le Guerra had four hits to lead the 'Lopes.
Â
Next, the team remains in Arizona for a pair of exhibition contests. Up first is a matchup with Aoyama University from Japan, scheduled at Surprise Municipal Stadium Monday at 4 p.m. CST. Then, the highly-anticipated Spring Training Opener against the Milwaukee Brewers is set for Wednesday at 2 p.m. CST.
