Panthers Take Two From Black Bears

UWM now 3-0 on the year

Winter Haven, Fla. – The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee baseball socked out a combined 29 hits and scored double-digit runs for the second and third-straight games to win both games of a doubleheader with the University of Maine at the Chain of Lakes Stadium Saturday.

Milwaukee cruised to a 12-3 win in seven innings in the opener before grinding out an 11-7 back-and-forth contest in game two.

"It starts with the offense in game one," Milwaukee head coach Scott Doffek said. "We just kept tacking runs on with good at bat and like we've done all weekend so far, we've had some big two-out hits. Those will break your spirit a little bit on defense more than anything. We're getting some good at bats. You can see our bats slowing down today."

The Panthers picked up right where they left off from Friday's convincing win, jumping on the Black Bears right out of the gates.

With one down in the third inning, Derek Peake singled up the middle. After advancing to second on a wild pitch, Mitch Ghelfi drove Peake in with another single up the middle to make it 1-0. After a walk by Sam Koenig, Tyler Hermann ripped an 0-2 pitch to the right field wall, driving in Ghelfi. Unes then drove in Koenig from third to make it 3-0 very quickly.

UWM kept it up in the fourth with two more runs scored. With two down, Luke Meeteer reached on an error and then stole second. Peake then roped a triple down the firstbase line to plate Meeteer. Ghelfi then collected his second RBI with a single to center to make it 5-0.

Milwaukee went on to plate five more in the sixth and two more in the seventh for a 12-0 lead before eventually winning 12-3 in the seven-inning opener.

Justin Langley pitched five solid innings, scattering two hits and three walks to go with his six strikeouts for the win.

"Langley ends up going five scoreless. He was effectively wild and ended up getting a good result," Doffek said. "He'll be better next week. He's going to pitch the ball better but you can't ask for much more than five scoreless."

The second game of the twin bill was a completely different ballgame.

Maine jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning.

Trailing for the first time this season, Milwaukee responded very well, plating a run in the first and two in the second to grab a 3-2 lead early.

After Maine reclaimed the lead, 4-3, in the fourth, the Panthers went right back up top in the bottom half of the inning.

Meeteer doubled in Daulton Varsho and Ghelfi singled through the left side to drive in Meeteer and put UWM back on top, 5-4 after four.

Maine refused to go away, plating three more in the top half of the fifth to retake a 7-5 edge.

In an entertaining game, UWM jumped right back in the bottom of the fifth. Nick Unes singled to start the rally and Tell Taylor blasted his first homerun of the year over the 380 mark in left center to knot the game up at 7-7.

From that point, the Milwaukee bullpen took over. Freshman Alex McIntosh pitched a scoreless sixth, seventh and eighth, allowing just one hit, retiring the side twice to bring the Maine offense to a halt.

"This was the first time where we didn't really get a good start," Doffek said. "I thought from a pitching standpoint, Alex McIntosh coming in as a freshman in his first time out really solidified the game and let our offense find their stride again. He really picked us up today."

With the game still tied, the Panther offense was nearly perfect in the bottom of the eighth.

Meeteer led the inning off with a walk and then stole second, his fifth stolen base of the day and seventh so far this season. After a perfect bunt single by Peake and an intentional walk to Ghelfi, Tyler Hermann came to the plate. The senior hit a sac fly to center, plating Meeteer. Unes then roped a 2-2 pitch past the third baseman and into left field, scoring Peake and Ghelfi. Taylor padded the lead by knocking in Unes to close out the scoring.

"(Those hits were) huge," Doffek said. "It was all set up by Meeteer, taking an 0-2 count into a walk, stealing second base and pressuring with his feet and then Peake takes a 1-2 pitch and bunts it down the line perfectly and that created the big inning."

This marks the first time in program history Milwaukee has started 3-0 on the year. UWM also plated 10 or more runs in three games to start the season for the first time ever.

The Panthers will go for the weekend sweep Sunday, closing out the four-game series with Maine with a noon first pitch.
