Panthers Just Miss Series Sweep, Falling 6-4

Milwaukee takes season-opening series, 3-1

Winter Haven, Fla. – The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee baseball team suffered a hard luck, 6-4 loss to the University of Maine in the final game of the series at Chain of Lakes Stadium Sunday.

Milwaukee (3-1) batted around and scored three runs in the first inning but struggled at the plate from there.

Scott Heath pitched seven innings for the Black Bears (1-3), including six scoreless, to record the win.

"I felt like we put ourselves in tough situations throughout the game," Milwaukee head coach Scott Doffek said. "We didn't do a great job of commanding the strike zone and let a couple routine plays get away from us. Those extra outs will get you."

After falling behind 3-0 in the top half of the first inning, the Panthers responded well by batting around in their first time at the plate to answer right back and tie the game up.

With the bases loaded and nobody out, Sam Koenig singled to left field to score Luke Meeteer from third. Next up was Tyler Hermann, who dropped a 1-0 pitch into shallow right past a diving second baseman, scoring Derek Peake. The Panthers kept it going as Mike Porcaro plated Mitch Ghelfi on a fielder's choice, beating out an attempted double play.

From that point on, Heath seemed to find a rhythm, limiting UWM to just one hit and one walk before exiting in the top of the eighth.

The game remained knotted up a three until the sixth.

Eight Black Bears went to the plate in the top half of the inning, scoring three times with only one run earned to stake a 6-3 edge.

The Panther offense came back to life in the bottom of the eighth. After chasing Heath from the game, Peake and Koenig both walked, forcing another pitching change for Maine.

Following a walk by Hermann and a sac fly by Porcaro, Maine brought in closer Charlie Butler to try and get the four-out save. Tell Taylor walked to load them up, but Milwaukee would have to settle for just one run, closing the gap to 6-4, the eventual final score.

The loss was the first of the season for the Panthers, who start the season 3-1 after taking the first three in the series from a Maine team that was receiving votes heading into the season.

"We would've liked to have played a little more fundamentally sound today, but I definitely appreciate how hard the team played," Doffek said. "They played very hard and picked each other up all weekend long. There's a lot to build off of heading into the weeks to come."

Milwaukee now turns its attention to Louisville. The Panthers have a three-game series with the Cardinals scheduled for next weekend in Kentucky, starting Friday at 2 p.m.
