Points Record Falls As Panthers Blitz Eagles, 125-74

Milwaukee sets handful of school records

MILWAUKEE - Seven different players scored in double-figures, led by a career-high 22 points apiece by J.J. Panoske and Akeem Springs, as the Milwaukee men's basketball team rolled to a 125-74 victory over Judson University Sunday afternoon at the Klotsche Center.

The Panthers (8-3) scored the first 14 points of the day and led the Eagles (6-8) comfortably all afternoon in breaking the 11-year old team record for most points in a game.

"The good thing about today is, after having such an emotional game on Wednesday and beating Wisconsin, to turn around and not have a letdown and play the game of basketball the way it should be played, that is what I was pleased with," Milwaukee head coach Rob Jeter said. "I thought we did that. We threw the ball inside, we played a physical game. To play everybody, get some guys some rest, and got some of those guys who haven't had a chance to play some time on the court with the lights on."

Panoske finished with his second career double-double, adding a game-high 10 rebounds in 20 minutes of game time. Springs added four rebounds and four assists, making 9-of-11 shots in just 19 minutes.

Jeter pulled most of the starters with 15 minutes to play and all of them were on the bench the final 10-plus minutes.

Brock Stull came off the bench to finish with a career-best 18 points on 6-of-7 shooting, adding five rebounds and three assists in his 19 minutes of action.

JayQuan McCloud scored 12 points and had five boards, Austin Arians had 11 and both Cody Wichmann and Matt Tiby rounded out the players in double figures with 10.

Every player who suited up and played in the game found the scoring column except starting point guard Jordan Johnson, who did not attempt a field goal but had nine assists and zero turnovers. Alex Prahl also had a career-high with six points and Baylor Peterson scored his first collegiate basket.

Drew Makiewicz led the visitors with 21, all coming on three-pointers.

"That's a heck of a night and we'll take that," Jeter said in regards to the school records that were broken. "We weren't trying to do anything besides play basketball the right way and as a result something special happened."

The Panthers led 14-0 to start the day and were ahead 17-5 at the first media timeout. The Eagles would not go away quietly at first and used impressive three-point shooting to stay in the game in the first half. Judson would make 10-of-22 three's in the first half alone and finished the day with 16.

Milwaukee scored the final 10 points of the first half to take complete control at 66-38 at intermission, also breaking the program's 24-year old record for most points in a half – which had been 61 – set back in 1991.

The Panthers kept adding to the lead and were up 34 points when Jeter pulled most of the starters. The reserves kept hitting, and Scotty Tyler's offensive rebound and putback of a missed free throw at the 2:33 mark gave Milwaukee 118 to break the record for most points in a game. The former mark of 117 was set against Prairie View A&M back on November 20, 2004.

It was a great shooting day for the whole squad, with the 62.7 percent clip (47-of-75) from the field checking in at No. 4 on the best single-game effort in program history.

UWM outscored Judson in the paint by a staggering total of 72-14, had 32 assists – tying the school record – to just nine turnovers and won the rebounding battle by double at 55-27, which at +28 was second in school history to a +36 rebound margin set against Loyola in 2009.

Up next, the Panthers stay at home and host South Dakota Thursday, set for a 7 p.m. tip at UWM Panther Arena.
