Panthers Clinch Postseason Berth Despite Loss

Milwaukee falls to Green Bay

MILWAUKEE – Freshman Maddie Williams had 13 kills and senior Sammi Herron added 10 more but it wasn't enough as the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee volleyball team fell 3-0 to Green Bay Saturday afternoon from the Klotsche Center.

Milwaukee (9-20, 7-9 Horizon) did well, but just couldn't come up with the big points in the loss to Green Bay (17-12, 8-8 Horizon), 25-21, 25-23, 25-21.

Despite the loss, the Panthers did earn a berth to the Horizon League Tournament and will be the No. 6 seed. UWM will face No. 3 seed Valparaiso Friday at 3:30 Central Time in Cleveland, Ohio.

"Credit to Green Bay, they came out and showed they wanted this match today," Milwaukee head coach Susie Johnson said. "Statistically, we played well today. We just couldn't come up with plays at the critical moments of the match. We'll learn from this heading into the conference tournament."

Williams led the way for Milwaukee on the attack with 13 kills on .423 hitting, marking the 11th time she has reached double figures in kills in her first collegiate season. Herron hit .381with 10 kills, the third-straight match she has reached double digits and the sixth time in the last nine games.

Price was tops in the match for the Panthers in both assists (31) and digs (13). That is her fifth double-double in her last six games.

Milwaukee did well in the opening set. The two teams took turns taking the lead until Green Bay claimed a 13-12 lead at the midway point. The Panthers kept it close the rest of the way, but couldn't quite get back on top in dropping the opener.

Set No. 2 was a bit more of a game of runs. After a 7-7 tie, GB was able to muster a 12-7 edge before Milwaukee roared back with six-in-a-row for a 13-12 lead after a Phoenix error. Later, the Panthers used a 4-0 run to jump up 22-21 late. But, it was Green Bay that was able to get the last spurt to take the second, 25-23.

UWM responded well after the break, exploding out to an 11-6 lead. But, GB was able to slowly chip away before taking its first lead at 15-14. It would remain close until late, when the Phoenix again made a late run to seal the win.

The Panthers will now head into the conference tournament to take on third-seeded Valparaiso Friday at 3:30 pm Central Time. The two teams split their regular season matchups, with each team winning on its home court.
