Panthers Come Up Just Short At Conference Tournament

Jones posts career-high 18 kills

CLEVELAND – Freshman Celine Jones tallied a career-high 18 kills but it wasn't enough as the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee volleyball team came up just short to Valparaiso University, 3-2, in the Horizon League Tournament quarterfinals Friday afternoon from Woodling Gymnasium.

Milwaukee (9-21), the No. 6 seed in the tournament, came out strong but couldn't quite put away the pesky, third-seeded Crusaders (26-7), 25-18, 20-25, 23-25, 25-17, 15-11.

"I felt like our team came to play today," Milwaukee head coach Susie Johnson said. "We had some very nice moments in the match, but unfortunately Valpo pushed back. It was hard for us to sustain the level of play that we needed to win our conference tournament.

"It's never easy to lose, especially when it's your last match of the year. Congratulations to our seniors on a strong career."

Jones had an outstanding day on the court, hitting .295 with a career-high 18 kills – significantly higher than her previous best of 12. Maggie Dunbar (12) and Sammi Herron (11) also reached double figures in kills on the day.

Kayla Price had 49 assists on the day to go with 15 digs – her 11th double-double on the season.

Myanna Ruiz again led the way defensively, collecting 24 digs for the match. Mykie Olsen also did well, tallying 11 digs.

Milwaukee did well in the opener. It was a back-and-forth match until late. The teams were tied at 12 apiece before VU was able to make a small run to claim a slight edge. The two teams continued to trade points from there, but Milwaukee couldn't quite cut into the lead in the close loss.

The Panthers were offensively brilliant late in the second. Milwaukee had two 5-0 runs throughout the set, one early and one late. The second gave them a 19-17 edge, a lead UWM would not relinquish. Sammi Herron closed things out with a thunderous kill to even things up heading into the break.

There were some dramatic swings in the third. Milwaukee jumped out to leads of 7-3 and 11-5. A 7-0 run by the Crusaders gave them a 16-14 lead, only to see the Panthers again climb back on top at 23-20. Valparaiso made things interesting, tying it back up at 23-23, but UWM was able to find the final two points to take the 2-1 lead.

Milwaukee just couldn't quite find its groove in the fourth. After an early lead by UWM, Valparaiso spurted off a 9-1 run to take control. The Panthers showed no signs of quit, bringing it back to 15-13 after a kill by Jones but couldn't get any closer the rest of the way.

In the fifth, UWM again just couldn't quite get on track. Despite not playing at their finest, the Panthers were still finding ways to find points as the score was tied 8-8 past the midway point. From there Valparaiso was able to find a rhythm and claim the well-fought match.
