First-Place Vikings Escape Milwaukee With Win

Dunbar posts career-high 28 kills

MILWAUKEE – Maggie Dunbar collected a career-high 28 kills but it wasn't enough as the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee volleyball team came up just short to Cleveland State University, 3-2, in a thriller Saturday afternoon from the Klotsche Center.

UWM – playing in its second five-set match in less than 24 hours – battled back from a 2-1 deficit but came up just short in the end, 22-25, 25-22, 25-23, 25-27, 15-12.

"I am very proud of my team right now," Milwaukee head coach Susie Johnson said. "We played so well today against a very good Cleveland State team. They lead our league for a reason and we did a lot of really good things today. It's frustrating that it comes down to just a loss because this team deserves better than that after what they showed today."

Dunbar had an outstanding day on the court, leading all players with 28 kills on .377 hitting. That kill mark is not just a career high, but also tied for the most by a Horizon League player this season.

Freshman Maddie Williams had 11 kills, Sammi Herron 10 and Jess Kalous nine to help Milwaukee (6-17, 4-7 Horizon) give the Vikings (20-4, 9-1 Horizon) all they could handle.

Kayla Price had 53 assists, while Myanna Ruiz chipped in another seven.

Ruiz led the defense with 16 digs. Mykie Olsen was right behind with 15, with another 11 from Maddie Schmitz and nine more from Price.

The Panthers made a big statement in the opening set, carrying the momentum from Friday night's win into the start of Saturday's match. After falling down 9-3, Milwaukee stormed back and grabbed its first lead at 13-12. UWM would never look back, leading all the way to the end and putting it away on a kill by Celine Jones. Maggie Dunbar led the way in the opening set with six kills.

Milwaukee kept it going, claiming an early 7-2 lead in the second after a kill by Jess Kalous. This time, it was CSU that was able to bounce back, and despite four kills apiece by Jones and Dunbar, the Vikings were able draw the match level.

Despite another even match against the top team in the league, Milwaukee just couldn't find that finishing touch as Cleveland State was able to sneak out another win for the 2-1 lead.

The Panthers fell behind 7-2 early in the fourth only to come roaring back. A kill by Dunbar – one of her seven in the set – tied things up at 13-13 and a kill by Price gave Milwaukee its first lead of the set. From there, it was back-and-forth. Tied at 25 apiece, UWM was able to emphatically claim the set on back-to-back blocks by Kalous and Price to send it to the decisive fifth set.

In the fifth, the Vikings were able to claim an early edge. Milwaukee stayed close the whole way, putting pressure on Cleveland State all the way to the end. But, CSU was able to grab a few late points to sneak out of Milwaukee with the win.

The Panthers wrap up their non-conference schedule with a Monday matchup at Marquette, taking on their cross-town foes in the Al McGuire Center at 7 p.m.
