Panther Comeback Comes Up Short At Green Bay

Three players reach double figures in digs

Green Bay, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee volleyball team made a roaring comeback attempt only to come up just short in a 3-0 loss to Green Bay Friday night from the Kress Center.

Milwaukee really got going late in sets two and three and pushed Green Bay (14-7, 5-3 Horizon) to the limit before falling 25-20, 25-18, 26-24.

"Tonight was frustrating," Milwaukee head coach Susie Johnson said. "Green Bay was good tonight, but we had good individual performances. Our defense was great. We just aren't quite putting it all together at the same time as a team. I know we're capable of getting there. We need to build off these individual performances and play a complete match."

Three players reached double figures in digs for the night. Myanna Ruiz led the way with a match-high 17, followed closely by Kayla Price with 15 and Mykie Olsen with 10.

Price paced Milwaukee in assists on the night with 26, while Maggie Dunbar notched 10 kills on the night to lead the way.

The opening set was a back-and-forth affair. GB claimed an early 7-4 lead only to see the Panthers pounce back for an 11-10 lead after a block by Nicole Latzig and Taylor Mansfield. But, the Phoenix was able to go on a brief run late that Milwaukee couldn't quite fully recover from in taking the opening set.

Green Bay never trailed in set number two, riding a wave of momentum from the home crowd for a big lead early. Milwaukee did what it could, making an 8-4 run – including a spurt of four-straight – to cut the lead in half but it just wasn't enough.

The Phoenix was riding high early in set three, taking the first five and claiming a big lead late. Milwaukee was able to find its rhythm, hitting five in a row with three straight kills by Sammi Herron forcing a GB timeout. After a brief response by the home team, the Panthers took over, pounding the floor for eight in a row to storm back for a 22-20 lead. It was back-and-forth from there though, and Green Bay was able to do just enough to find the winner in extras, 26-24.

UWM finally returns back home where it will play its next three, starting with a mid-week match against Oakland on Tuesday at 7 p.m. from the Klotsche Center.
