Panther Comeback Falls Just Short

Ruiz collects 1,000th dig in loss

CHICAGO – The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee volleyball team stormed back after falling down early only to come up just short, taking a tough 3-2 loss to UIC Saturday afternoon at the Flames Athletic Center.

UIC (9-10, 3-3 Horizon) jumped out to the early lead before just holding on and fending off a furious Milwaukee comeback attempt, 25-20, 25-18, 21-25, 22-25, 15-11.

"We showed a lot character coming back today," Milwaukee head coach Susie Johnson said. "This was a tough match for us after a quick turnaround from yesterday and I was glad we responded a lot better. Maggie Dunbar came through and did a really nice job for us. Myanna did well defensively. We'll look to use those type of efforts this week and build on that heading into our next match."

Dunbar had an impressive individual effort to help lead the comeback effort, leading the Panthers (5-14, 3-4 Horizon) with 17 kills while adding 12 digs for the double-double. Nicole Latzig came off the bench to add a season-high nine kills on the day.

Myanna Ruiz tallied a match-high 21 digs on the day – giving her over 1,000 for her career in just her junior season.

Kayla Price added another 50 assists on the day – the fourth time she has notched at least 50 assists in a match on the season.

In the opening two sets, Milwaukee kept it close but couldn't quite get over the hump as UIC claimed the early 2-0 lead.

From there, UWM stormed back.

UWM was able to keep it close early in the third to start to add some confidence. Tied at 18 a piece late, the Panthers built off that confidence to put together the final pieces. Kills from Kaisa Mattson and Jess Kalous gave Milwaukee the lead before a block by Dunbar and Maggie Williams sealed the win.

In the fourth, Milwaukee spotted the Flames a big lead before mounting another outstanding comeback. Down 16-8, the Panthers rattled of seven straight, sparked by a pair of Latzig kills and a block by Price. UWM then closed it out on a 7-2 run, capped by an ace by Dunbar.

Coming down to the deciding fifth set, Milwaukee again fell behind early after a quick 9-4 Flames lead. The Panthers refused to go quietly and again battled back, within two. Time just ran out on the final comeback attempt and UIC was able to escape with the win.

UWM has just one match on its schedule next weekend – a Friday road contest against in-state, league rival Green Bay at the Kress Center.
