DETROIT (January 4, 2015) –
Matt Tiby scored a season-high 20 points and pulled down nine rebounds but the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee's (5-11, 0-2 Horizon) comeback attempt came up short in an 83-67 setback versus Detroit (7-9, 1-1 Horizon) this afternoon at Calihan Hall. Tiby was one of four Panthers to score in double figures, joined by Steve McWhorter (12), J.R. Lyle (12) and Akeem Springs (11).

Lyle drained a three-pointer form the left corner, was fouled and knocked down the ensuing free throw, for the rare four-point play to even the score at 15 at the 8:54 mark of the first half.

However, a basket by Paris Bass opened up a string of 13 straight Titan points that put Detroit on top, 28-15, and its lead would grow to as many as 14 (31-17) before Milwaukee closed the period on a 10-6 run. J.J. Panoske's three-pointer from the corner just beat the first-half buzzer and sent the Panthers into the break down 37-27.

The better part of the first 10 minutes of the second half was a scoring battle between Tiby and Detroit's Juwan Howard, Jr., who entered the game as the Horizon League's leading scorer with 18.9 points per game. Tiby scored 12 of the Panthers' first 15 points in the second stanza , while Howard, Jr. totaled 13 of his team's first 19 points.

Trailing 47-29 early in the second half, Tiby sparked a 13-5 Milwaukee run that culminated with his dunk that cut the deficit to 52-42, and gave the Panthers hope of a comeback.

After Detroit had built the lead back up to 16, a jumper by Akeem Springs with 4:11 left in the game sliced Detroit's lead to 73-61, but the Titans scored 10 of the next 13 points to seal the outcome.

Milwaukee, which had shot just 33 percent from the field over the last four contests, wound up draining 47 percent of its attempts today, including 54 percent (14-for-26) in the second half alone.

Howard, Jr. totaled 26 points and added six assists and five rebounds to lead Detroit, which connected on 52 percent of its field-goal attempts.

Milwaukee, which has played its last five games on the road, returns to UW-Milwaukee Panther Arena for the first time in a month when it hosts Horizon League rival and preseason favorite Green Bay on January 9 at 8 p.m. That game will be televised live on ESPNU.
