MILWAUKEE (January 9, 2015) – Steve McWhorter equaled a career high with 21 points but the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee's (5-12, 0-3 Horizon) second-half rally ultimately fell short in a 79-63 loss to Green Bay (13-3, 2-0 Horizon) tonight at UW-Milwaukee Panther Arena. Keifer Sykes scored a game-high 34 points to led Green Bay.
"Give credit to Green Bay and Keifer Sykes for how they played tonight," Milwaukee Head Coach
Rob Jeter said. "I'm proud of how we battled in the second half. When we got rid of trying for the home run play and started to hit singles, I thought we played much better."
Milwaukee hit three of its first five shots of the game and led by as many as five points in the opening minutes. But, after McWhorter hit his second of four three-pointers on the night to put Milwaukee ahead 13-10, Green Bay rattled off eight unanswered points to kick off a 32-6 run that ended with Carrington Love's layup that made it 42-19 in favor of the Phoenix.
Sykes nearly outscored the Panthers on his own in the first half, totaling 22 points on 8 of 11 shooting from the field, including 4 of 5 from three-point territory as the Phoenix took a 47-27 lead into the locker room.
Milwaukee trailed by as many as 23 in the second half, but there was no quit in the Panthers. A layup by Sykes put Green Bay on top 56-34 with 15:08 remaining in the contest, but
Matt Tiby bookended a 16-6 Milwaukee run with layups to slice the deficit to 62-50.
Three minutes later, a Tiby free throw got the Panthers within 67-56, but Green Bay used an 8-2 run to build up a 17-point cushion, 75-58.
A three-pointer by
Akeem Springs and layup from McWhorter cut into the Phoenix lead, but the Panthers would get no closer than 12 points the rest of the way. Milwaukee found its rhythm on offense in the second half and shot 50 percent (12-for-24) from the field after knocking down 35 percent (8-for-23) of its shots in the opening 20 minutes.
Four Panthers accounted for all but one of the team's points this evening, with McWhorter leading the way with 21 points, on 7 of 12 shooting, to go with four rebounds and five assists. Springs pitched in 18 points, his highest total since going for 21 points in the season opener at Auburn.
Tiby posted his fourth double-double of the season with 13 points and 11 boards and
J.J. Panoske chipped in 10 points and five boards.
Milwaukee continues a three-game homestand when it hosts Youngstown State on January 14 at 7:30 p.m., following the Panther women's game versus Wright State.
