Panthers Come Up Just Short To Marquette

Bailey takes down Golden Eagles’ No. 2 player

MILWAUKEE –
Chelsea Bailey claimed her first win of the year but it wasn't enough as the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's tennis team came up just short to Big East power Marquette Saturday afternoon from the Helfaer Tennis Stadium.

"Today was an improvement from last weekend," Milwaukee head coach Maddy Soule said. "We played another very challenging team, but we put up a great fight up and down the lineup. We had our chances to take the doubles point and the team improved from last week. It is evident the women are starting to come together more fluidly as a team and really put forth that eager, winning mentality."

Bailey was the highlight of the day for Milwaukee. After dropping a tough first set, the senior battled back against Marquette's Erin Gabes in the No. 2 spot and earned back-to-back 6-4 wins to take the match.

"Chelsea really fought hard to win at the two spot," Soule said. "Her experience really shined throughout the entire match."

The Panthers had numerous other great efforts on the day. Alysa Straub did well against Marquette's top player in Ana Pimienta before eventually coming up just short, 6-2, 6-2.

Aerielle Pendleton also came up just short against the Golden Eagles. Going up against Paula Tormos Sanchez, Pendleton went back-and-forth all match. The sophomore nearly claimed a first-set win before eventually falling, 7-6, 6-3.

UWM also did well in doubles, with Bailey and Hayley Marshall coming just short in a hard-fought 8-7 contest at the three spot.

Milwaukee is right back at it tomorrow, playing host to both Chicago and Bradley starting at 11 a.m.
