Panthers Battle Back For Tie Against Parkside

Team dominates scoresheet in 2-2 draw

Box Score

MILWAUKEE - Senior Laurie Bell scored a pair of goals to help the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee remain unbeaten in the 2014 exhibition season with a 2-2 tie against the University of Wisconsin-Parkside Thursday evening at Engelmann Stadium. The Panthers dominated the stat sheet, outshooting the Rangers by a count of 21-to-5 while earning all 10 corner kicks on the night.

"It was an interesting game," head coach Kris Kelderman said. "In my mind, it was a very good game for our guys to experience. We had a lead and then we were down. The reserves that came in for us brought some energy, made us better and got us the 2-2 result. We had a lot of shots, we had a lot of corner kicks and failed to finish. But, it was a good experience for us today."

Bell scored on a penalty kick in the 13th minute, only to see Parkside tie it up in the 33rd minute and take a 2-1 advantage in the 40th.

It was Bell again at the 72:41 mark, slotting home the equalizer. Milwaukee came oh-so-close to the winning goal on a handful of occasions the rest of the way, but could not find the back of the net in the 2-2 decision. No overtimes were played in the exhibition contest.

"That's Laurie's thing," Kelderman said. "We are expecting a lot of things from him this year, although I think he'll admit that he has some room to get in better form, and he will."

The Panthers nearly had a quick start. Just 29 seconds into the game, freshman Reid Stevenson rifled one past the goalkeeper and to the far post, but the ball banged off the framework back into play. About a half-minute later, freshman Petter Ingebrigtsen sent one just wide from the front of the box.

"We have a big group of freshman coming in and they are talented," Kelderman said. "We have to get them out here and get them minutes, get them experience, get them adjusted to college soccer. So far they are doing well and just need to keep getting better every day."

The Parkside goalkeeper came out to try and corral a ball in the 13th minute, but fouled a UWM player to bring the whistle for the penalty. Bell sent the PK by and Milwaukee led, 1-0, at the 12:52 mark.

Parkside had a pair of goals in a span of seven minutes, with Elliot Schultz heading one in and Ryan Shogren slotting another to make it 2-1 Parkside at intermission.

The Panthers kept up the intensity all throughout the second half, outshooting the visitors by a count of 13-1 after halftime alone. Junior Patrick Ruhland created a quality chance in the 64th minute, only to see a backline defender keep the ball from the back of the net.

Junior Declan Rodriguez had a go at it in the 70th minute, launching a header off a corner kick by junior Zach Stevenson just to the left of the post.

Sophomore Beau Laufer also created a beautiful chance off another Stevenson corner, sending his header just high in the 74th minute.

Milwaukee had two great chances to claim the victory in the final five minutes. Freshman Nick Moon took a crack from the wing, but Parkside keeper Marcos Perez dove and got enough of a touch on it to knock the ball off the crossbar.

Reid Stevenson had one final opportunity, only to see another great stop by Perez on a close-range header help the Rangers escape with the draw.

Junior Agustin Rey (30:28) and sophomore Jonathan Stahr (31:04) each made a save. Sophomore Liam Anderson (28:28) was not called upon for a save in closing it out as all three goalkeepers on the roster split time.

"They were all deserving of some minutes tonight," Kelderman said. "It was the last preseason game and we wanted to look at all of them in game-situations."Next up is the regular-season opener, with UWM welcoming DePaul to Engelmann Stadium August 29 for a 7 p.m. start under the lights.
