MILWAUKEE - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee opened a busy weekend of matches with a convincing 6-1 win over IUPUI Friday afternoon.
The Panthers (5-7) easily won the doubles point and then put the match away in singles play.
In doubles, Diana Tokar and Dana Shannon claimed an 8-5 win in the top spot while Hayley Marshall and Alysa Straub captured an 8-2 win in the second spot. IUPUI defaulted in the third spot.
Then, in singles play, Milwaukee quickly wrapped things up. Tokar won, 6-0, 6-0, in the top spot to set the tone while Straub captured a 6-1, 6-0 victory in the fifth spot. Hayley Marshall and Christina Colarossi also won in singles play, while Kristin Kurer was a default winner in the sixth spot. Dana Shannon was on the verge of winning her match in the fourth spot before she had to retire with an injury.
"It was a very solid effort today," head coach Greg Cromwell said. "It was too bad Dana went down with an injury right before she won but everyone else took care of business. It's a good way to start the weekend and we have very important conference matches tomorrow and Sunday."
Milwaukee is back in action with two more contests this weekend. The Panthers face Oakland Saturday afternoon and Detroit Sunday morning.
