EAST LANSING, Mich. -
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee claimed wins in both singles and doubles but fell to Michigan State, 6-1, Sunday afternoon.
Freshman Hayley Marshall broke through with a three-set win in singles while Christina Colarossi and Kristin Kurer teamed up for a doubles victory.
Marshall's win came in the second spot. After dropping the first set to Erin Faulkner, she rallied to win the second set, 6-4, and the third, 10-8.
Milwaukee's doubles victory came courtesy of Christina Colarossi and Kristin Kurer in the third spot, with the tandem claiming an 8-6 win over Athena Trouillot and Anna Zelechonok.
The Panthers actually had an opportunity to win the match thanks to three other close contests. Milwaukee nearly won the doubles point, with Marshall and Alysa Straub suffering a hard-fought 8-6 loss in the second spot.
Then, in singles play, Kurer lost in three sets to Trouillot in the sixth spot, while Dana Shannon was a tiebreaker away from extending her singles match to a third set.
Milwaukee returns home next Saturday to face Northern Illinois.
