Cleveland State Cools Off Panthers

Hitting errors doom Milwaukee

MILWAUKEE - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee volleyball struggled to get things going offensively and could never quite get on track in a 3-1 loss to Cleveland State Saturday afternoon from the Klotsche Center.

Milwaukee (15-12, 9-3 Horizon) committed 33 attack errors on the day – the second most all season – in the 20-25, 25-18, 22-25, 22-25 loss.

The loss is the first in the last five league games for UWM, which finishes its home schedule with an impressive 9-3 mark on the year.

Grace Kauth and Maggie Hannon each reached double figures in kills for Cleveland State (13-13, 6-7), which hit .300 or better in each of the final two sets to seal the match.

"It was another tough match for us," Milwaukee head coach Susie Johnson said. "Cleveland State, just like Youngstown State last night, came to play and they really made some impressive plays. They played to win. I think we were playing a little bit not to lose and that's hard. It's hard to be in the position that we've been in and keep countering that. It's difficult but we'll be fine.

"We had way too many hitting errors and that was why we lost the match. We have to be able to control that better and we're going to go back to work on Monday in practice and figure it out."

In a closely fought first set, a pair of attack errors by UWM gave the Vikings a 12-9 lead midway through the opening frame. The Panthers fought back as a pair of kills by Nicole Latzig closed the gap to just 22-20, but CSU would rattle off three-straight to claim the early lead.

Milwaukee regrouped nicely in the second set. A service ace by Kayla Price followed by a Hannah Blanchard kill gave UWM an early 6-3 edge. Sammi Herron had back-to-back kills, with Price tallying a kill of her own to stretch the lead to 18-14. The Vikings did their best to rally but kills from Julie Kolinske and Blanchard ended any thoughts of a comeback to draw the match level at 1-1.

It was back-and-forth much of the third set. Cleveland State grabbed a 20-15 edge after a pair of attack errors by Milwaukee and fought off a valiant Panther comeback attempt to close it out with a kill by Kauth.

It was much of the same in set No. 4. With things knotted up at 21-apiece, the Vikings were able to dig deep and score four of the final five points to claim the win.

Milwaukee now hits the road for its final two matches of the regular season, first taking on league-leading Oakland University Friday evening at 6 p.m. CST.
