Panthers Come Up Just Short At Oakland

Milwaukee falls in five-set thriller

Rochester, Mich. - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee volleyball team rallied to force a decisive fifth-set but came up just short in the final frame, falling 3-2 to Oakland University at the O'rena Friday night.

Down two sets to one, UWM posted a strong comeback to force a fifth set but came up just short, 25-19, 22-25, 21-25, 25-23, 10-15.

Milwaukee (15-13, 9-4 Horizon) now clinches a second-place finish in the Horizon League standings with one match to play. Oakland (19-9, 11-2 HL) clinches its first-ever Horizon League title after joining the conference one year ago.

Three Panthers finished in double digits in kills, including Julie Kolinske with a team-high 15. Kayla Price had a game-high 54 assists, while three UWM players finished in double figures in digs, led by Taylor Golabowski at 17.

"We were right there," Milwaukee head coach Susie Johnson said. "It was a hard-fought match. It was a very meaningful match with the league championship essentially on the line, and it was tough. Oakland did a very nice job again with their block against us. Oakland came through and played a little better in the end. I thought we played well and fought hard. There were some really great things came out of that. I thought Kaisa had a great match. That's great for her. We'll go back at it tomorrow and try to finish the season on a strong note."

A back-and-forth match all night long, Milwaukee jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after the first set. A 4-0 run highlighted by back-to-back kills by Myanna Ruiz sparked UWM to an early 13-7 lead. Following a service ace by Golabowski and an Oakland attack error, Milwaukee stretched the lead to 17-10. A kill by senior Hannah Blanchard and two-straight errors by the Golden Grizzlies closed out set No. 1.

Down three midway through the second set, Milwaukee regrouped for three straight followed by a block by Blanchard and Nicole Latzig to knot things up at 16 a piece. After more back-and-forth play, UWM drew it to 21-20 late, but Oakland was able to pull away late.

The third set was incredibly close all the way through and featured 12 ties and five lead changes, both game highs. Two kills by Mattson brought Milwaukee within three late, but it wasn't enough as OU's Cassie Pelloni closed it out.

UWM showed some incredible fight in the fourth. Despite falling down 9-4 early, the Panthers fought back and grabbed their first lead at 15-14. Back-to-back kills by Mattson gave Johnson's squad a 17-14 edge. Tied late a 23-23, kills by Kolinske and Price forced a fifth set between the league's top two teams.

After a kill by Ruiz tied the shortened final set at 3-3, Oakland went on a 3-0 run and would never relinquish the lead. UWM did its best, drawing things to within three at 11-8, but the Grizzlies proved to have the advantage late before claiming the narrow victory.

Milwaukee now travels to Dayton, Ohio for a 3 p.m. Central match Saturday against Wright State.
