Undefeated Valparaiso Edges Past Milwaukee

Crusaders clinch first-ever league title with win

Valparaiso, Ind. - Valparaiso University continued their 14-game unbeaten streak with a narrow 1-0 win over the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team Wednesday night from Brown Field.

Milwaukee (5-10-2, 1-4-2 Horizon) dominated the possession throughout the game, but couldn't find an answer after an early VU (10-1-4, 6-0-0) goal.

Valpo, which boasts the seventh-best defense in the nation, limited the potent UWM offense to just three shots all game.

The Crusaders are one win away from clinching at least a share of their first ever Horizon League title with their first-ever win over Milwaukee in program history, moving to 1-15 all time in the series.

"We came out with a lot of heart and a lot of fight in the second half, but it just wasn't enough," Milwaukee head coach Greg Henschel said. "We had some incredible efforts by Krissy Dorre, Maria Stephans and many others, but we've been struggling to put a full 90-minute game together all year and that was unfortunately the case again tonight."

Valparaiso jumped on the board early. April Cronin jumped on a turnover by the UWM defense and made the most of it for her team-leading sixth goal of the season at the 15:56 mark.

From there, the VU defense dug in.

Despite dominating the possession after conceding the goal, Milwaukee struggled to get their offense going in the final third against the seventh-ranked defense in the country.

It looked like the Panthers were able to crack that stingy VU defense in the 51st minute, as Vienna Behnke hammered home a shot off a corner. But, the goal was disallowed as Milwaukee was whistled for a foul on the play.

Milwaukee continued to control the ball seemingly the rest of the game, but Valparaiso added extra defenders and packed it in defensively to limit Milwaukee's attack.

The Panthers now have over a week before heading to Detroit for their final regular season game of the year, taking on the Titans Saturday, Oct. 31 at 2 p.m. CST.
