Four different Panthers claimed singles victories on the first day of the challenging Gopher Invitational. The event is the fall opener for the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's tennis team.
Dana Shannon and Hayley Marshall each claimed wins in the Gold Flight Singles while Chelsea Bailey captured a win in the Maroon Flight Singles. Alysa Straub added a victory in the Gopher Flight.
Shannon opened the day with a tiebreak loss to Mariya Toncheva of Eastern Michigan before bouncing back for a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Milica Pavlovic of South Dakota. Marshall nearly broke through with a huge win in her first outing, also falling in a tiebreaker to Yuliana Umanets of Minnesota. She quickly bounced back and handled Mikaela Bennett of North Dakota 7-6, 6-1.
Bailey and Straub were the first two winners of the day for Milwaukee. Bailey beat Amanda Dick of Drake in her opening match, 7-5, 6-0, before falling against Daphne Friedrichs of Eastern Michigan later in the day. Straub opened her day with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Michelle Elkin of South Dakota before falling in a tiebreaker against Tiffany Lankelma of Northern Iowa.
The highlight of the day in doubles play came in the top flight, where Christina Colarossi and Diana Tokar nearly knocked off a tandem from Minnesota before falling, 9-7.
Action in Minneapolis continues both Saturday and Sunday.
