GREEN BAY, Wis. -
Alec Brown scored 18 points and Green Bay used a 21-4 run to take control of the game in claiming a 62-46 win over the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Tuesday night in the first round of the Horizon League Tournament.
The Panthers had a 19-18 lead with 5:15 to play in the first half but Green Bay led by six at the half and then opened the second half on a 12-2 run to build a 16-point advantage.
Paris Gulley scored 14 points and Jordan Aaron added 10 for the Panthers, who shot just 26.5 percent from the field and were outrebounded 47-35.
Keifer Sykes added 16 points and Jordan Fouse 12 points and 11 rebounds for Green Bay, which beat Milwaukee in all three matchups between the two teams this season.
Green Bay (17-14) advances to a second round tournament matchup with UIC Friday in Valparaiso, while Milwaukee (8-24) sees its season come to a close.
"This night kind of sums up how the season has gone," Milwaukee head coach Rob Jeter said. "We've really been able to do things to a point, and then after that there's always a large run that of kind puts it away. We've never really recovered from those runs."
Senior Demetrius Harris battled through a severe case of the flu to add seven points and seven rebounds off the bench for Milwaukee. Earlier Tuesday he was at a local medical clinic receiving IV treatments in the hopes he could suit up.
"I really didn't expect to play him," Jeter said. "He is clearly a young man not wanting to give up on his teammates and wanted to be on the court to do everything he could to help. He was ready to go from the start."
Green Bay built a 17-9 lead midway through the first half but Milwaukee responded by scoring 10 of the next 11 points for a 19-18 advantage. The Phoenix then answered with nine points in a row to rebuild an eight-point lead and carried 27-21 advantage into the locker room.
The Phoenix then continued the run into the second half, scoring 12 of the first 14 points of the frame for a 39-23 advantage. The Panthers did find their outside touch for a stretch in sparking a bit of a comeback, as two 3-pointers by Kyle Kelm and a three by Gulley brought Milwaukee to within 41-33. But Green Bay answered with the next 10 points to rebuild an 18-point advantage and the Panthers could never get closer than 11 points after that.
