MILWAUKEE -
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's tennis team captured a pair of convincing wins Friday, beating Western Illinois in the afternoon before opening Horizon League play with a win at Green Bay in the evening.
The Panthers (7-5) were never threatened in either match. Milwaukee lost just three games over singles and doubles play against the Leathernecks while UWM's only match loss against the Phoenix came because of injury.
Milwaukee has now won four-straight matches overall.
"I am very happy we have won four matches in a row," Milwaukee head coach Sean McInerney said. "We are starting to play at the level we need to be at to compete in our league."
The doubles tandem of Maddy Soule and Christina Colarossi extended their winning streak to seven-straight matches with a pair of wins. The duo is now 22-3 overall this season.
Soule, Dana Shannon, Chelsea Bailey, Christina Colarossi and Kristin Kurer each won two singles matches on the day, while Brittany Skemp also captured a singles win.
In addition to the victories by Soule and Colarossi in doubles, Shannon and Kelly Fritz went 2-0, as did Bailey and Skemp.
UWM has just one match next week, hosting Whitewater Saturday at North Shore Elite. The Panthers' next Horizon League matches are March 29, when Milwaukee will play both UIC and Valparaiso.
"It has been a very tough 12-match stretch and I think we are better prepared for conference this season than past years," McInerney said. "Green Bay played very hard against us and I am glad we got a conference road win, which is always tough. We are a little beat up right now but we have a little lull in our schedule that will give us an opportunity to get healthy and be ready for a tough stretch of conference matches at the end of the month."
