BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Sophomore Laurie Bell scored a second-half goal to eventually send the game to overtime but Bowling Green University netted the game-winner on a penalty kick in the 103rd minute to hand the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's soccer team to a hard-luck 2-1 defeat Tuesday at Cochrane Field.

The Panthers (4-4-0), who were once again without four regular starters due to injury, lost to the Falcons (3-4-2) despite holding advantages of 21-to-13 in shots and 8-to-5 in corner kicks.

Danny Baraldi tallied the game-winning PK at the 102:45 mark, ending the first overtime contest of the 2012 campaign for Milwaukee.

"It was disappointing to lose in that fashion at the end," Milwaukee head coach Kris Kelderman said. "I was very pleased with the effort the guys put in. I thought the first half we played pretty well, but had one breakdown where we left someone open on the back side of the box for a goal. I thought that was their one and only real chance of the first half. And I thought we responded well, fought harder, got a goal and got ourselves back in contention of getting a result."

The Panthers had four of the five shots in the overtime sessions before the PK was handed out and nearly won it themselves. In the first extra session, freshman Aaron Horvat had an opportunity in the 92nd minute before UWM would get a pair of chances - by senior Cody Banks on a header and also from sophomore Zach Stevenson - in the final 30 seconds of the period.

Horvat had a shot blocked in the 103rd minute and seconds later the UWM defense was whistled for a foul in the penalty area to set up the winning PK.

"We're not good enough to give away careless goals," Kelderman said. "We have to be a little smarter and a little more disciplined in all areas of the game. We played well, we fought hard, but there were a couple of breakdowns."

Trailing, 1-0, at halftime despite a barrage of shots at the BGSU goal, the Panthers leveled the game early on in the second half. Horvat tried to split a pair of defenders on the right side of the penalty area and was fouled, resulting in the PK attempt for Bell. He calmly converted from the spot for his fourth goal of the year and a 1-1 contest at the 57:29 mark.

"In general, I thought we were the better team - we outshot them 21 to 13 - but we still have to improve on a couple of areas that have kind of been our fault throughout the season," Kelderman said. "One of them is getting a lot of shots, but we only had five on target. That's an area where we definitely need to improve on."

Senior John Shakon made three saves in the loss. Horvat led the offense with six shots, with Stevenson second with three.

Next up, the Panthers will open the Horizon League portion of their schedule, heading to Chicago to take on Loyola Saturday. Game time is set for 7 p.m. under the lights at Loyola Soccer Park.
