MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's tennis team got its 2012 fall season off to a strong start with 10 singles wins on day one of the Gopher Invitational.

Kristin Kurer, Dana Shannon and Brittany Skemp each went 2-0 in singles to highlight the day's action.

"For the first day of the season, we definitely outperformed what I thought we would do," Milwaukee head coach Sean McInerney said. "To win 10 of 14 singles matches against this kind of competition is a far cry from our performance at this point last year. We still have a long way to go but we're off to a very good start."

Skemp and Shannon each advanced through the second round with wins over players from Northern Iowa, while Kurer beat a player from Air Force. All three players are in the Gopher Singles Flight.

Maddy Soule went 1-1 in the Gold Singles Flight, beating Caitlin Hindmarsh of Iowa in the opening match.

Kelly Fritz, Christina Colarossi and Chelsea Bailey each split two matches on the Maroon Singles Flight. Bailey claimed a win over a player from Minnesota to highlight the action.

UWM also went 1-3 in double play, with Soule and Colarossi teaming up to beat Chelsea Moore and Jessica King of UNI, 8-0.

"We played extremely well in singles and now I'm looking forward to seeing us bounce back a little bit in doubles tomorrow," McInerney said. "Our top doubles team was very good and I'm hoping to see even more from everyone else."

Action in both singles and doubles continues throughout the day in Minneapolis.
