MILWAUKEE, Wis. (Aug. 11, 2012) - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team fell to Michigan State, 1-0, Saturday afternoon at Engelmann Stadium in its lone intercollegiate exhibition match of the 2012 preseason.

Three freshmen got the start for Milwaukee, which opens the regular season Friday, Aug. 17, when it hosts No. 24 South Carolina.

"It felt good, getting a lot of things out of the way today," Greg Henschel said of his first match as UWM head coach. "We played a nice first half and overall played a good match today. I'm satisfied with our first time out."

Freshman Paige Lincicum got the start in goal and made a pair of saves in her first collegiate action. She was joined by fellow rookies Sky Perna on defense and Callie O'Donnell at forward.

The Panthers looked strong early, keeping possession well throughout the first half and earning the bulk of the scoring chances in the frame. Senior captain Helen Steinhauser led the way with a pair of shots, including a header on goal in the sixth minute.

Michigan State came out of halftime as the aggressor, taking control of the game's momentum early on. The Spartans built up to the game's lone score in the 56th minute. Jordan Mueller brought the ball out of the midfield and slid a through ball past the UWM defense to Lisa Vogel, who slotted the ball past Lincicum.

Milwaukee worked its way back into the game late in regulation, but was unable to come up with the equalizer. Kelly Lewers had a terrific shot turned away in the 87th minute on a sprawling save by Nicole Pond.

Lewers finished with a team-high four shots, while Steinhauser had three. Overall, the Panthers were outshot 9-8, but earned all four corner kicks in the game.

Three keepers combined on the shutout for MSU. Courtney Clem played the entire first half and make one save, while Gabrielle Gauruder and Pond split the second.
