MILWAUKEE -
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's tennis team opened Horizon League play with a 6-1 win over Green Bay Friday night at LeClub.
The Panthers (5-3, 1-0 Horizon) won the doubles point and then closed out four singles matches in straight-sets to wrap up the victory.
Maddy Soule helped set the tone in both singles and doubles play. She teamed with Christina Colarossi to claim an 8-2 win in the top doubles slot and then captured a 6-0, 6-0 win in the top singles spot. Colarossi won her singles match convincingly, claiming a 6-1, 6-2 victory in the third spot. Freshman Chelsea Bailey also won in straight-sets in the second slot.
Kristin Kurer and Brittany Skemp added singles victories for Milwaukee while Kurer teamed with Kelly Fritz for the other doubles win.
"Our top three players played very well today and it was a great way to start the league season," head coach Sean McInerney said. "Green Bay is a veteran team at the top of its lineup and we handled them very well. Maddy was dominant in her match and our two freshmen were very good playing in the second and third spots. That Green Bay team has a lot of the same players that beat us two years ago so to win convincingly shows how far we have come."
UWM has a pair of home matches next weekend, hosting Valparaiso Friday and Ball State Saturday.
