MILWAUKEE, Wis. (Nov. 4, 2011) -
Helen Steinhauser scored the game's lone goal and the Panther defense made it hold up as the No. 15 University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team defeated Butler, 1-0, Friday evening at Engelmann Stadium.
The top-seeded Panthers (17-2) now move on to their fourth-straight Horizon League Championship game Sunday to face Wright State, the fifth seed. The Raiders upset Detroit 3-2 in the day's first semifinal.
"We're thrilled that we won and that we are advancing to the final," UWM head coach Michael Moynihan said. "I'm pleased with our performance and being able to break down (their game plan). That goal in the first half was important. (We) probably should have had a few more goals, but in the end we got the job done."
Milwaukee's patient approach was the key in the first half, as it meticulously took its chances, possessing the ball for the majority of the half and generating an 11-1 shot advantage in the frame. Six of those shots were on frame, including the lone scoring tally of the contest.
Steinhauser's goal came after a dynamic run into the box by Kelsey Holbert in the 35th minute. After beating her defender to the endline, Holbert cut inside and fed Steinhauser at the near post. She one-timed the ball into the net and provided the only offense UWM would need.
The Panther defense limited the Bulldogs for the entire game, conceding just six shots, but none from within the penalty area. Jamie Forbes was called on to make just one save in registering her 10th shutout of the season.
In the second half, Butler was able to adjust a bit and fight for more possession going forward, but eventually the Panthers adapted and were able to get back on repeated attacks. While some chances did not result in shots, Milwaukee repeatedly pushed forward with dangerous scoring chances.
UWM peppered the BU goal with 17 shots in the game, putting nine on goal and forcing Julie Burton into eight saves on the night. In addition to the 17-6 shot advantage, the Panthers also had a 7-1 edge in corner kicks.
Steinhauser, Holbert and Sarah Hagen led Milwaukee with four shots apiece.
Sunday's Horizon League Championship game is set for a 1 p.m. kickoff. The Panthers defeated the Raiders 3-1 during the regular season when the teams met Oct. 1 in Dayton, Ohio. Milwaukee is going for a fourth-straight league crown and league-record ninth overall.
