ROCKFORD, Ill. -
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's tennis team won three singles matches and a doubles contest on day two of the ITA Second Chance Regional.
Maddy Soule, Chelsea Bailey and Brittany Skemp claimed singles wins while the tandem of Bailey and Kelly Fritz captured the doubles victory.
"After a challenging first day I think we did a much better job today competing as a team," UWM head coach Sean McInerney said. "The competition level here is very high and we showed up in a big way today. I am proud of what this program is becoming and proud of the effort that was put forth."
Soule and Bailey each claimed wins over players from Michigan State. Soule's win was in straight sets while Bailey won in a third-set tiebreaker.
"This was by far the best day Chelsea has had as a Panther," McInerney said. "She picked up a good doubles win with Kelly and beat the best player she has played this fall. I was impressed with how she mentally held it together finding a way to win two tie-breaks in a row, which is very tough to do. I am very proud of her!
"Maddy played a very smart, patient match which was the goal for her. She did a great job putting herself into a winning position against a good player from MSU. This win was her best effort of the fall and I have no doubt it will carry over to the spring."
Meanwhile, Skemp continued her strong play this fall with a three-set win over Haley Dekkinga of Northern Illinois
"Brittany has played really well the entire fall and picked up another solid win today," McInerney said. "She fought her way through a difficult matchup and found a way to win. I am very happy she has worked so hard and become a good teammate. I am looking forward to her development throughout the season."
The doubles victory by Bailey and Fritz came over a tandem from Northern Illinois.
Play in the event wraps up Sunday.
