FORT WAYNE, Ind. -
Andy Masteller scored the only goal of the game in the first half, leading IPFW to a 1-0 victory over the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's soccer team Tuesday afternoon at Hefner Field. The Panthers (1-2-1) pressed late, recording five shots in the final eight minutes of the contest, but could not break through for the equalizer against the Mastodons (2-4-0).
"We played really poorly in the first half and didn't finish our chances," Milwaukee head coach Chris Whalley said. "Maybe not playing for eight days showed up in how we played. We didn't show up until the second half. It's very disappointing because in two of the last three games we haven't scored, but we are getting plenty of chances. We have to get there. We know it will take time but we are just going to keep working hard to get there and start picking up results."
Junior Bryce Boyd made his UWM debut in goal and recorded six saves, but Masteller's strike in the 32nd minute - a header off a cross from Jorge Ramirez - provided the difference. Milwaukee created numerous chances to force overtime, including in the 71st minute when sophomore Cody Banks saw his attempt hit off the cross bar and back into play.
"He's (Boyd) played really well in practice and has been working hard and we felt like he deserved a shot," Whalley said. "He played really well today. He really didn't have a shot at the goal but did make a couple of really decent saves."
Banks also had an opportunity on a header in the 82nd minute but sent it high. Junior Ross Van Osdol then saw his chance get saved in the 84th minute by keeper Donovan Dowling, one of five saves he recorded in earning the shutout. Freshman Robbie Boyd and Banks also had chances in the 86th minute, but both of those were blocked before reaching the goal.
Milwaukee outshot IPFW by a count of 17-to-14 in the game, including 10-to-6 in the second half, marking the fourth-consecutive contest this season it has outshot its opponent. In addition, the Panthers forced nine corner kicks compared to just four for the Mastodons.
Banks and Van Osdol each finished with a game-high four shots, with senior Greg Rosenthal adding three more.
The Panthers return to action this weekend, heading to Madison for the Wisconsin Soccer Classic. Their first game in the event is scheduled for Friday against Dayton, starting at 5 p.m.
