MILWAUKEE, Wis. (Aug. 29, 2010) -
Katy Frierson broke a 1-1 draw with her goal in the 75th minute to lead Auburn to a 2-1 win over the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team on the final day of the 2010 Milwaukee Cup Sunday afternoon at Marquette's Valley Field.
The Panthers (1-2-1) put together another strong half, but was unable to overcome a late Tiger (2-1) goal. UWM finished the Milwaukee Cup with a 0-1-1 record after a 1-1 tie with New Mexico Friday.
"I feel like we had two games here and I thought we should have won both of them," Milwaukee head coach Michael Moynihan said. "It's tough to come away from here with a tie and a loss. It's one of the fortunate things about playing a tough schedule--redemption is right around of the corner. We have Michigan State, Marquette and Wisconsin coming up and we just have to play better."
The tournament wrapped up with the Lobos defeating Marquette in the final game of the tournament to claim the title. MU was second, Auburn third and the Panthers took fourth in the tournament. Nicole Sperl was named to the all-tournament team following the game.
Facing a 1-0 deficit coming out of halftime, Milwaukee switched around its personnel and came out of the gates pushing the ball forward on offense. The game plan worked out as it was able to generate a number of dangerous chances in the first moments of the frame.
The pressure paid off as Keara Thompson finished a loose ball in the 68th minute to knot the game at 1-1. Thompson initially beat the AU keeper to the ball to force the loose ball. Melanie Coderre later got a foot on the ball to tip it to a wide open Thompson for the goal.
The Panthers maintained the momentum, but the Tigers were able to break through for the decisive score. Ashley Marks slipped a through ball to Frierson, who was able to fend off a pair of defenders for a 1v1 with the keeper. Her goal came in the 75th minute.
After the score, the game became more wide open with a number of shots both ways. Unfortunately for Milwaukee, it was not able to tie the game for the second time.
UWM held a 16-12 shot advantage for the game after outshooting AU 12-8 in the second half. The Panthers also forced six of the game's 10 corner kicks.
Leslie Deebach got the start in goal for Milwaukee and made five saves. Amy Howard started for Auburn and made two saves for the win.
Makenzie Gillaspie took a game-high six shots in the game and Sarah Hagen took four.
UWM returns to action next Sunday hosting Michigan State. The game will be played at nearby Shorewood High School due to the ongoing resurfacing project at Engelmann Field. The game kicks off at noon.
