CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - Stephen Huff allowed three hits in seven scorelsss innings to lead Austin Peay State University to a 9-1 victory over the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee baseball team Friday afternoon in the opener of the Riverview Inn Invitational at Raymond Hand Park. The Panthers (1-5) could not get on track offensively against the Governors (6-3), failing to reach 10 hits for the first time in four outings.

"When you execute like we did in all three phases - pitching, hitting and fielding - that is the kind of result you will end up with," UWM head coach Scott Doffek said.

Huff (2-0) had trouble finding the plate, walking four batters, but got a few key outs early on to keep Milwaukee off the scoreboard, stranding five runners on base in the first three innings alone. APSU struck for two in the second against sophomore Kyle Schmidt (0-1), with Cody Hudson doubling in a pair to open the scoring.

"Their pitcher was effectively wild, but to his credit, made some quality pitches early in the game and we could not recover," Doffek said. "We just need to regroup, come back tomorrow, and execute all phases much better."

The Governors tacked on three more in the fourth on a three-run home run by Hudson and kept the Panthers off the scoreboard until the eighth, when junior Chad Pierce drove in sophomore Paul Hoenecke, who extended his hitting streak to six games with a double.

In addition to that pair, seniors Dan Buchholz and Shaun Wegner and junior Sam Sivilotti were the only others to hit safely in the contest. Schmidt ended up going 6.0 innings, striking out three and walking one while allowing five earned runs.

The Panthers return to action with a pair of games tomorrow, taking on SIU Edwardsville in a doubleheader starting at 10 a.m.
