MILWAUKEE -
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision to Creighton University Sunday at the Paley Tennis Center.
The Panthers (2-6) did post a number of strong performances in defeat. UWM won one of the doubles contests while Sammi Schoen claimed a singles victory. Milwaukee also nearly pulled out two additional singles contests, extending a pair of matches to three sets.
Schoen was a 6-2, 6-3 winner over Lauren Mastro at number-three singles. In the fourth slot, Kari Kastenholz dropped a three-set decision to Kelsey Schmidt, falling 6-2 in the deciding third frame. Meanwhile, Jenna Felsher also fell in three sets to Mary Pat McMullan at number-six singles.
"I really feel like this was the best we have performed this season in singles," UWM head coach Sean McInerney said. "We set the points up well but struggled finishing. I was really happy with our improved consistency, which was a point of emphasis this past week at practice."
In doubles play, Kelly Drvaric and Kari Kastenholz got UWM off to a solid start with an 8-4 victory over Sarah and Leesa Cadwallader in the number-one slot. But, the Panthers dropped the other two doubles contests to drop the doubles point.
"Kelly and Kari turned in the best doubles performance we have had all season," McInerney said. "They really attacked and stayed aggressive all match. I was really happy with their movement and emotion the entire match. It was a great individual win for them."
UWM returns to action with a pair of matches next weekend. Milwaukee plays at Bradley Friday before taking on Marquette Saturday.
