INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (Nov. 7, 2010) -
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team scored four second-half goals to roll past Butler, 5-0, in the 2010 Horizon League Championship Sunday afternoon at the Butler Bowl.
The second-seeded Panthers (12-6-2) won their third-straight league tournament championship and advance to the eighth NCAA Tournament in school history. Their five-goal win over the Bulldogs (9-11) was the largest win in a league title game in league history.
"It feels as good as any of the others, especially this year coming in as the second seed," Milwaukee head coach Michael Moynihan said. "We were very pleased with the way our season started off. A couple of the league teams got the better of us during the regular season and we wanted to (come in here) and reassert ourselves."
Milwaukee will find out where it goes for the NCAA Tournament Monday. The NCAA Tournament selection show is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. central time on ESPNU.
Sarah Hagen scored two goals and assisted on a third in the game and was named the League Tournament MVP for the third-straight season. She was joined on the all-tournament team by Leslie Deebach, Keara Thompson, Sarah Talbert and Sara Stern.
Stern scored what proved to be the game-winner in the 31st minute on a loose ball in the penalty area. The Butler keeper could not handle a long ball into the box and Stern pounced on the loose ball and staked the Panthers to a 1-0 lead. Stern then set up Hagen's first goal to start the second-half scoring, playing a nice through ball past the defense. Hagen ran on to the ball and calmly beat the keeper.
Eight minutes later, Helen Steinhauser sent a cross through the box that tucked inside the far post to make it 3-0. Meghan Elvington followed suit just 94 seconds later off an assist from Hagen. Hagen left a ball back that Elvington ran onto and blasted into the net.
The scoring was capped in the 75th minute on Hagen's third goal of the tournament. Alyssa Chamberlain set up that score with another tremendous through ball past the defense. Hagen calmly ran onto the ball and beat the keeper 1v1.
The Panthers outshot Butler 20-7, including by an 11-1 count in the second half. They put nine shots on goal and hit the cross bar twice to keep the Bulldogs on their heels for much of the game.
BU threatened to score first, but Deebach came up with a key save midway through the first half and the defense eventually cleared the ball out of danger. She played 165:23 of shutout soccer on the weekend. Jamie Forbes made two saves while playing the final 14:37 of Sunday's game.
Every healthy field player for UWM played in the game.
