MILWAUKEE, Wis. (Oct. 15, 2010) -
Keara Thompson drilled a volley of a Nicole Sperl cross in the 100th minute to send the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Green Bay in overtime Friday evening at Engelmann Field.
The Panthers (8-5-2, 4-1 Horizon) outshot the Phoenix (2-8-3, 0-4-1 Horizon) 27-4 on the night, but could not find the back of the net until the very end.
"I'm relieved we finally got that goal," Milwaukee head coach Michael Moynihan said. "It was elusive and took a long time to get it, but in the end we won. It was a big one. Nicole made a great serve and Keara did a great job to get her body behind it and get it into the back of the net."
Milwaukee had trouble navigating the Green Bay defense, holding possession for the vast majority of the game, but often facing nine players behind the ball on each attack.
To set up the game-winning play, Sarah Hagen was held attempting to get into the penalty area, prompting a yellow card on the GB defender. On the ensuing free kick, Sperl hit a cross through the box that Thompson was able to volley into the net at the far post to end the game.
Hagen paced the offense on the night with eight shots, including three on goal. Meanwhile, Makenzie Gillaspie took five shots in the game and Thompson four.
UWM's opportunities were ample, as it was awarded a free kick from 25 yards away in the 42nd minute, but Hagen's shot was saved. That was the case in the 61st minute on a lofting ball into the box from Mary Wandolowski. Helen Steinhauser beat her defender to the ball, but the GB keeper made the save.
In the 71st minute, Sperl sent a cross into the box that Hagen headed just over the goal.
Maddie Drusch made nine saves on the night for the Phoenix. On the other end of the field, a pair of Panther goalkeepers split time in recording the shutout, though neither of which was ever tested. Leslie Deebach got the start and finished with Milwaukee's only save. Jamie Forbes entered the game at halftime and played the final 54-plus minutes to get the win.
In addition to the lopsided shot totals, UWM also forced a 6-1 edge in corner kicks. The game was cleanly played, as each team was whistled for just six fouls.
The Panthers return to action Sunday at Loyola. Milwaukee (4-1) is currently second in the league standings with 12 points, while the Ramblers (4-1-1) are first with 13, but have played one more game. Kick-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Loyola Soccer Park.
