MILWAUKEE -
Kerri Schuh and Elizabeth Egerer had 13 kills apiece as the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee claimed a convincing 25-16, 25-19, 25-22 win over Wright State Sunday afternoon at the Klotsche Center.
The Panthers (10-8, 7-1 Horizon) were in control most of the match in bouncing back from yesterday's five-set loss to Butler.
Milwaukee hit a solid .217 in the contest and collected 12 blocks in slowing the Raider attack.
Schuh was a huge part of UWM's all-around effort, adding 16 digs, seven blocks and seven assist to her 13 kills.
Shaunda Sandifer had 10 kills to lead Wright State (7-13, 2-6).
"We had a really good focus today and our block was excellent," UWM head coach Susie Johnson said. "Our attack was so much better and our defense was better, so it was a good day."
The Panthers were in control of the first set throughout. UWM took the lead for good at 6-5 and eventually led 13-8 after two-straight kills by Egerer. Wright State was able to crawl back to within three points, but a burst of five-straight by Milwaukee pushed the advantage to 21-13. Another kill by Egerer made it 24-15 before a Wright State error finished things off for the Panthers.
UWM also led nearly the entire way in the second set, but did need a late surge to secure the win. The Panthers were ahead 12-6 after a run of four-straight points that included two kills from Egerer. The lead was still 15-11 after another Egerer kill and 19-15 following a block by Jena Berg and Rachel Neubeger. Wright State countered with three in a row to close to within 19-18, but a kill by Schuh stopped the run and UWM regained control from there. A kill by Berg made it 22-18, an ace by Anna Bartz pushed the lead to 23-18 and a kill by Egerer made it 24-18. After one more Raider point, yet another kill by Egerer pushed UWM up by two sets.
The Panthers had to fight back from a slow start to win the third set. Wright State scored the first five points of the frame and still led 12-9 after a kill by Katherine Godina. But, UWM tallied the next six points to claim a 15-12 lead and, after falling behind by a point again at 17-16, rattled off four-straight to take control. A service ace by Lauren Hintze pushed the edge to 22-18 before a kill from Schuh finally sealed it.
Milwaukee returns to action with two more home matches next weekend. The Panthers face in-state rival Green Bay Friday night before entertaining SIU Edwardsville in a non-league match Saturday afternoon.
