Panthers Off To Strong Start At Mastodon Invitational

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's tennis team posted a strong effort on day one of the Mastodon Invitational Friday.

Overall, the Panthers went 9-3 in singles matches and 3-3 in doubles contests.

UWM has a player in the championship match in three of the singles flights, with Maddy Soule, Sammi Schoen and Kristin Kurer all playing for titles Saturday.

Meanwhile, in doubles action, UWM's top two doubles squads advanced to the semifinals before falling.

In the top singles flight, Soule claimed a pair of straight-sets wins and will face Kate Chybowski of Evansville in the title match Saturday. Schoen also captured a pair of straight-sets wins in the third flight and will play Raquel Vescovi of IPFW in the championship final Saturday. Meanwhile, Kristin Kurer recorded a pair of two-set victories in the fifth singles flight and will play Yuka Kobayashi of IPFW in the championship final Saturday.

Kelly Fritz split her two singles contests in the second flight, while Megan Gow earned a split of her two matches in the fourth flight with a three-set win over Stephanie York of Valpo. Beth Ganser also split a pair of matches in the sixth flight and will play in the third-place match tomorrow.

In doubles action, Soule and Fritz fell, 8-2, in the top-flight semifinals to a tandem from Evansville and will now play a team from Green Bay in the third-place match Saturday. In the second doubles flight, Schoen and Mary Ellen Donovan dropped a 9-7 decision in the semifinals and will now face a mixed tandem from Valpo and IPFW in the third-place match Saturday.
