MILWAUKEE -
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's tennis team pulled out three, 3-set victories to claim a hard-fought 5-2 win over Bradley late Saturday night at the Paley Tennis Center.
After dropping the doubles point, the Panther rallied for three-set wins at #1, #3 and #4 singles to snap a two-match losing streak. In two of those singles wins, UWM players bounced back after losing the first set.
Megan Gow and Jenna Felsher then sealed things with straight-set victories in the fifth and sixth slots.
UWM started things by dropping the doubles point. Sammi Schoen and Ashley Schoneman claimed an 8-3 win in the second slot but Megan Gow and Jenna Felsher came up just short in falling, 8-6, in the third slot.
That turned the focus turned to singles play, where Kelly Drvaric dropped her first set at #1 singles to Nicole Miller before rallying to win, 7-5, 7-5, in the final two sets. Kari Kastenholz did fall in three sets at #2 singles, but Schoen claimed a 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 win at #3. Then, Schoneman dropped her first set at #4 before winning, 7-6, 6-3, in the final two frames to give the Panthers a huge boost. UWM wrapped things up by claiming those final two singles matches.
"This was a big win," UWM coach Matt McCaskill said. "It was similar to our last two matches with all of the three-setters, but this time we won three of the four that went to three sets. We are still struggling in doubles and, after losing that doubles point, we were down in three of the first four singles matches. It looked bleak but everyone really dug in and pulled out some nice wins."
UWM heads to Green Bay for its Horizon League opener Sunday.
