INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (Oct. 2, 2009) - Sophomore Sarah Hagen scored midway through the first half and the Panther defense did not allow a shot on goal as the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team defeated Butler, 1-0, Friday evening at the Butler Bowl.

Milwaukee (4-5-3, 2-0 Horizon) has now beaten the Bulldogs (5-8, 1-1 Horizon) 16-straight times and picked up its first road win of the season in the process.

"In the first half, I thought we played very well. We possessed the ball and the goal was beautiful," UWM head coach Michael Moynihan said. "We kind of squandered a few chances, but we kept them at bay for most of the game until the end. Butler's going to be one of the top teams in the league. To come on the road and play the way we did and still get a solid `W', we'll take that any day."

Hagen scored the game's lone goal in the 20th minute with her league-leading seventh goal of the season. Senior Kate Megna started the play with a ball out wide to sophomore Keara Thompson. It was Thompson's centering cross that Hagen got her head on and finished into the back of the net.

The assist was the league-leading fifth of the year for Megna and the 25th of her career. She is one back of the school record, held by Lisa Krzykowski and Cammy Polson (both 1994-97).

UWM controlled the momentum throughout the first half, generating a number of solid attacking possessions, while stifling the Bulldog defense on the other end of the field. The Panthers held a 6-1 shot advantage in the opening half, including four shots on goal.

In the second half, Milwaukee looked dangerous for much of the half, but had to hold off an aggressive Butler attack. Junior Kelly McGrath had a shot cleared off the line in the 70th minute, which would've provided UWM with an insurance goal.

The Bulldogs' best chance of the game came in the 86th minute when a ball was played past the Panther defense. Fortunately for Milwaukee, Carrie Twyman's shot went wide right.

UWM forced a 15-6 shot advantage, including an 8-0 edge in shots on goal. BU keeper Jessica Shein kept the game at 1-0 with seven saves, in addition to one team save on McGrath's shot.

Freshman Jamie Forbes picked up her fifth shutout of the season with solid organization, but was not called upon to make a save.

Both teams earned three corner kicks and Milwaukee was whistled for just three fouls, compared to eight by the home team.

The Panthers return to action Sunday at Valparaiso. UWM and Valpo kick off at 1 p.m.
