MILWAUKEE -
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's tennis team opened the spring portion of its 2008-09 season with a 7-0 loss at Marquette Monday afternoon.
The Panthers dropped all six singles matches and all three doubles contests against the Golden Eagles.
The most competitive match of the day came in doubles action, where the number-two UWM tandem of Sammi Schoen and Ashley Schoneman dropped an 8-6 decision to Paola Calderon and Robin Metzler.
In singles action, Kelly Drvaric lost a 6-1, 6-3 match to Calderon in the top slot, while Kari Kastenholz fell, 6-1, 6-2, to Christina Ruiz in the second slot.
"This is a very good match for us to start the spring season with," UWM head coach Matt McCaskill said. "Marquette is extremely deep this year and beat UIC earlier in the day. Sammi and Ashley played solid in doubles and I thought Kelly, Kari and Sammi all competed well at the top in singles."
UWM continues a busy opening week with a trip to Michigan this weekend. The Panthers will face Kalamazoo Friday and Western Michigan Saturday. Kalamazoo is a nationally-ranked NCAA Division III opponent while the Broncos are ranked 52nd in NCAA Division I play.
