Panthers Open Fall With Hard-Fought Win Over Warhawks

WHITEWATER, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's tennis team opened the fall portion of its 2008-09 schedule with a hard-fought 5-4 win over UW-Whitewater Thursday afternoon.

The Panthers won two of three doubles matches and half of the singles contests to pull out the victory.

The key victory for Milwaukee (1-0) came at #2 singles, where Kari Kastenholz pulled out a 14-12 victory in the third set after splitting the first two sets against Indrig Stensvaag.

UWM also got a solid performance from freshman Megan Gow at #6 singles. She claimed a 7-6, 6-2 win over Jenny Woyahn in her first collegiate action. The other singles victory came courtesy of Sammi Schoen, who collected a 6-3, 7-5 win at #4 singles.

In doubles play, Kastenholz and Kelly Drvaric won in the first slot while Schoen and Ashley Schoneman pulled out an 8-6 win in the second slot.

The Panthers continue their first weekend of play by heading to Peoria for the Hotels at Grand Prairie Invitational. Action in the event begins Friday.
