FORT WAYNE, Ind. -
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's tennis team overcame an injury and one-set deficits in two key singles matches to claim a 4-3 win over IPFW Thursday afternoon.
The Panthers (10-7) had to default one doubles match and one singles match after freshman Ashley Schoneman injured her wrist during doubles play. But, UWM's other two doubles squads won their contests while Kari Kastenholz and Lauren Fenley each won three-set matches in singles.
"It was a great effort by the team to rally after it didn't look good with the early injury," UWM head coach Matt McCaskill said. "But we mustered up the doubles point and then pulled out some key singles matches. It was a huge win by Lauren Fenley at #5 since she usually plays at #6 and we did a good job of rallying in some matches after dropping the first set."
Schoneman fell on her wrist with her doubles team up 2-0 and the Panthers had to default that contest and her singles match. But, the doubles tandem of Kastenholz and Ali O'Neal claimed a 9-8 win in the #2 slot before Traci Litscher and Lauren Fenley captured an 8-3 victory at #3 doubles, giving UWM the doubles point.
Then, in singles play, Kelly Drvaric claimed an easy 6-3, 6-0 win at #1 singles before seeing two other Panthers rally for victories. At #2 singles, Kastenholz dropped the first set to Ashley Coulson before fighting back for a 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 victory. Then, Fenley recovered from a first-set loss to Lisa Bartelheim before capturing a 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 victory at #5 singles.
UWM continues its road swing Friday afternoon with a Horizon League contest at Detroit.
