BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (Sept. 8, 2006) -
Junior Joanna Severson converted a penalty kick in the 59th minute and the Panthers outshot their opponents 18-3 as the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee defeated Rhode Island, 1-0, in the first match of the Hoosier Classic Friday afternoon in Bloomington.
With the win, the Panthers continue their best start to a season since 1997 at 4-1, while the Rams fall to 1-4. The win was also the 200th in team history for Milwaukee.
Despite an ardent Milwaukee attack the entire game, the matches' lone goal didn't come until sophomore Sarah Teegarden was taken down in the box in the 59th minute. She won a ball outside the box and beat her defender before drawing the foul. Severson was called on to take the PK and converted the attempt past URI keeper Amanda Thomas.
UWM forced a number of scoring opportunities as eight of its 18 shots were on goal. Meanwhile, the Panther defense yielded just three shots and sophomore goalkeeper Erin Kane stopped all three for her second-straight shutout. Thomas finished with seven saves for the Rams.
"Erin Kane played solid for us" UWM head coach Michael Moynihan said. "What action she had, she did well, coming off her line and playing the ball with her feet. I was also really happy with her kicking game today, she had some nice punts for us."
Just a minute before the game-winner, Teegarden nearly netted a goal, heading an Amanda Winn corner kick off the post. Senior Elicia Scaife was able to get a foot on the rebound, but pushed it wide.
Milwaukee also forced three corner kicks on the day, but was whistled for six offside calls. Winn led the way with five shots, three on frame, while senior Taylor Powell added three.
"It's a win for us, which is great, but we could have had the game in hand earlier. Rhode Island was still able to threaten late in the game with some dangerous long balls," Moynihan said. "Thus far this year, we had done well with our finishing. Today, we just weren't as assertive and wasted some good opportunities."
Powell nearly added an insurance goal late, when junior Claire Pignet sent a long diagonal ball into the box. Powell's header caromed off the cross bar before sending her own rebound wide.
The Panthers continue on in the Hoosier Classic Sunday, taking on host Indiana at 12:30 p.m. central time.
