MILWAUKEE - Cheryl Hegemann tallied 18 kills to lead the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee to a 30-14, 30-12, 30-20 win over Windsor (Canada) in its opening match of the Pepsi Panther Invitational Friday afternoon.

The Panthers were never seriously threatened in any of the three games, holding the Lancers to a -.086 hitting percentage.

Sarah Moore added eight kills and Jamie Gabrielsen seven for Milwaukee, which hit .272 for the match.

Bethany Petkoff had four kills to lead Windsor, which is playing three exhibition matches as part of the Panther Invitational this weekend.

UWM scored nine of the first 11 points to take control of game one. The Lancers did close to within 14-12, but the Panthers pulled away from there. Leanne Felsing served UWM to 13-straight points before three late kills by Hegemann put the frame away.

It was much the same in game two, as the Panthers scored 12 of the first 13 points in cruising to the win. Two kills by Nicole Vilter pushed the lead to 26-9 before kills by Hegemann and Kelley Olson closed out the game.

Windsor put up more of a fight in game three, pulling to within 18-16 on an ace by Bethany Petkoff. But, UWM responded with eight of the next nine points to regain control. Two Windsor errors followed by kills from Moore and Vilter then closed out the match for the Panthers.

UWM returns to action at the Pepsi Panther Invitational Friday night, squaring off with Central Michigan at 7 p.m.

In earlier action Friday at the invitational, Central Michigan claimed a 3-1 win over Northern Colorado behind 20 kills from Alison Baker. The Chippewas and Bears split the first two games before CMU took control. Sarah Warner added 16 kills for Central Michigan, which hit .268 for the match.
