Hot-Hitting Louisville Sweeps Past UWM

Sept. 15, 2006

Box Score |  Notes

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Tatyana Kolesnikova had 15 kills and Louisville hit .377 for the match en route to a 30-21, 30-12, 30-21 win over the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Friday night at Cardinal Arena.

Cheryl Hegemann had 11 kills while Jamie Gabrielsen added nine for the Panthers (6-4), who hit a season-low .088.

The Cardinals (6-4) took full advantage of a 9-0 edge in blocks while also collecting eight service aces. Plus Louisville, which just missed out on a top 25 ranking in this past week's AVCA poll, had just eight hitting errors the entire match.

Leanne Felsing did post another solid match for the Panthers, hitting .308 while collecting six kills, 10 digs and 18 assists. With Felsing hitting well, freshman Kellye Zaporksi also earned time at setter, collecting 16 assists. Becky Peters helped the defensive effort with 11 digs.

"Louisville was very good and we tried everything we could to slow them down," UWM head coach Kathy Litzau said. "We did settle down a little bit in the third game with Jamie and Leanne hitting and Kellye setting, but it still was not enough."

Louisville took control of the first game with an 8-2 run to build an 18-12 advantage. UWM did trim the lead back to five but could never get any closer. The Cardinals hit .250 in the frame while forcing 12 UWM hitting errors.

Game two saw Louisville score the final 11 points of the frame behind the serving of Kolesnikova. The Cardinals hit .400 in the game while limiting UWM to a game-season-low 12 points and a -.129 hitting percentage.

The Panthers hung in during the third game thanks mainly to strong offensive play, but could never slow the Cardinals' attack. UWM was within four at 16-12 but would get no closer. Louisville hit .531 in the game, more than enough to offset a 17-kill, five-error frame by the Panthers.

UWM now has a full week off to prepare for the start of Horizon League play. The Panthers will host Youngstown State next Friday night before Cleveland State visits the Klotsche Center Saturday afternoon.
