MILWAUKEE -
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee dropped a pair of Horizon League home matches this weekend, falling to Illinois-Chicago, 7-0, and Butler, 6-1.
Elizabeth Angel claimed the lone win for the Panthers, scoring a 3-6, 6-1, 10-6 victory over Carrie Rachon of Butler.
UWM nearly claimed at least one more point against Butler, as Samantha Drews fell 1-6, 6-4, 10-6 to Chelsey Casperson. The Panthers also battled in two of the doubles matches, with Margie Van Lieshout and Drews falling 8-6 at #2 doubles while Angel and Traci Litscher fell 8-5 at #3 doubles.
Things were more difficult for Milwaukee against the defending league champion Flames. One of the more competitive matches came at #1 singles, where Iris Jaklin beat Van Lieshout, 6-3, 6-2.
"The team continues to improve and we are much more competitive from top to bottom than we were last year at this time," Milwaukee head coach Matt McCaskill said. "Obviously we faced two of the best teams in the league this weekend and I thought we saw a lot of good signs."
UWM returns to action next weekend, hosting UW-Green Bay in another league match.
