WATERLOO, Iowa -
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee won four of the six singles matches and claimed the doubles point to capture a 5-2 win over Western Illinois Saturday afternoon at the Black Hawk Tennis Club.
It is UWM's first win as a team since Feb. 22, 2004, when the Panthers beat IPFW.
The Panthers got the doubles point thanks to strong play from the tandem of Margie Van Lieshout and Traci Litscher, who claimed an 8-2 win at #2 doubles.
In singles play, Litscher won at #2 singles and the Panthers claimed wins at #4, #5 and #6 singles. Lauren Fenley claimed a 6-2, 6-3 victory at #4 singles, while Elizabeth Angel captures a 6-2, 6-3 win at #5 singles. Samantha Drews then added a final point for the Panthers with a default win at #6 singles.
"The women were very excited about the win," coach Matt McCaskill said. "We got some very good play from a number of people. It is nice to see the team rewarded with a victory and hopefully this is something we can build on a little bit."
UWM continues action in Waterloo Sunday, facing the hosts from Northern Iowa in a noon match.
