MILWAUKEE, Wis. (Nov. 3, 2006) - Mary Parker scored the game's lone goal in the 83rd minute as Detroit edged the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team, 1-0, in the Horizon League Tournament Semifinals Friday night at Engelmann Field.

The loss snaps the Panthers (16-3-1) school-record 11-game winning and 13-game unbeaten streaks. Meanwhile, the Titans (10-10) advance to the league title game Sunday against Loyola. The Ramblers defeated Butler, 3-1, in the other semifinal match earlier in the day.

"We lost three starters in the game to injury, but despite that I thought we were able to control much of the game," Milwaukee head coach Michael Moynihan said. "Despite losing those players, we created a number of opportunities, but just failed to finish them. When you don't finish chances, it will come back to haunt you."

UWM now must wait and see if its season is over, as the team will await word on an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament when selections are announced on Monday (Nov. 6) afternoon.

"Losing this game means we have to wait and see what the NCAA selection committee decides," Moynihan said. "This team is too good for their season to be over."

Parker received a ball out of the midfield and fended off a UWM defender to blast a shot on frame from 25 yards out. Her shot just beat sophomore keeper Erin Kane and slid under the cross bar for the deciding score.

Milwaukee had controlled the pace of the match throughout, outshooting Detroit 13-5, including 6-1 in the second half. The Panthers also held a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks and were whistled for just nine fouls, compared to 23 by the Titans. Following the goal, UWM feverishly pushed for the tying score, but could not generate a scoring play. Senior Taylor Powell brought the crowd to their feet with 30 seconds remaining when she headed a shot just over the goal and into the top netting.

Detroit keeper Katie Fortenberry made six saves on the night, while Kane made just one, sprawling save in the 30th minute. A Panther defender fell down on the play, allowing a 1v1 with Jenny Whaley on Kane. Whaley ripped a shot from six yards out, but Kane was ready, hitting the ball over the cross bar.

The Panthers' best opportunity on the night came early on when freshman Louise Vraney tracked down a long ball to the far side of the field in the fourth minute. She outran the UDM defense and saw her shot sail just wide of the net.
