YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (Oct. 6, 2006) - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team outshot Youngstown State 34-2, but it was a goal by senior Taylor Powell in the 100th minute that proved to be the difference as the Panthers defeated the Penguins, 1-0, Friday afternoon in Youngstown, Ohio.

Milwaukee (10-2-1, 3-0 Horizon) pushed its unbeaten streak to seven games (6-0-1) and remained undefeated (6-0) against YSU (2-9, 0-2 Horizon) all-time.

"Youngstown does not bring an imposing record, but they are well-organized in the back and play well at home," UWM head coach Michael Moynihan said. "We had a number of good chances, but just didn't finish. Regulation or overtime, we were able to get the goal we needed and that's what matters."

Powell scored the game's lone goal in the 100th minute on a loose ball at the top of the box. After a short Youngstown goal kick, UWM took possession of the ball and served it back into the box.

Freshman Erin Kreuser challenged a YSU defender, sending the ball to the top of the box. Powell ran on to it and blasted a shot into the upper corner for the winner.

The Panthers had turned up the pressure in the extra frame, pushing for a golden goal. They took seven shots in the abbreviated overtime period. That followed three shot attempts over the final 26 seconds of regulation.

UWM sent nine of its 34 shots on goal on the day, while not allowing a shot until the 60th minute. The Panthers also held the edge in corner kicks, 4-0. Sophomore keeper Erin Kane was not called on to make a save in picking up her eighth shutout of the season, while Caitlin Bodzioney made eight saves for YSU.

"We a number of chances because we were able to push another player into the attack," Moynihan said. "With Ginny Graczyk anchoring our defense, it allows us to commit more players to the attack. They only had two shots and I don't think Erin (Kane) had to do much but goal kicks."

Milwaukee had a number of scoring opportunities, sending a few shots off the posts. In the 38th minute, sophomore Sarah Teegarden launched a shot from the top of the box off the cross bar. Freshman Louise Vraney then hit the post on a 1v1 opportunity with the goalkeeper in the 86th.

Teegarden led the team with eight shots, while Powell, Vraney and senior Stacey Faude each took four shots for the match.

The Panthers remain in Ohio for the weekend to take on Cleveland State Sunday at 11 a.m. central time.
