MILWAUKEE, Wis. (Oct. 4, 2006) - Junior Joanna Severson converted a penalty kick in the 88th minute and senior Stacey Faude scored two goals to lead the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team to a 3-2 win over UW-Green Bay Wednesday night at Engelmann Field.

The Panthers (9-2-1, 2-0 Horizon) battled back from a 2-1 deficit to remain perfect in league play, while the Phoenix (6-3-2, 1-1-1 Horizon) suffered its first league loss of the season.

"It was an interesting match. I thought we were phenomenal in the first half," UWM head coach Michael Moynihan said. "In the second half we were still dangerous, but two quick mistakes and they took the lead. For us to be down after controlling so much the match could have caused a collapse, but we responed with maturity. For us then to tie the game again so quickly shifted the momentum back in our favor."

Milwaukee was awarded a penalty kick at the 87:37 mark of the match after senior Taylor Powell was taken down in the box on a corner kick. Severson calmly converted her second PK of the season just left off the middle for the deciding score. The goal capped a comeback that saw the Panthers trailing 2-1 in the 77th minute.

UWM had jumped on the board first in the 14th minute on Faude's first goal of the game. Freshman Kayla DeJardin sent a long ball into the center of the penalty box. Sophomore Sarah Teegarden tipped a pass to Faude, who ran on and finished from eight yards away.

"Stacey had a huge game," Moynihan said. "She came out on fire today and was playing fast and furious. She has had a few good games lately, creating chances, but she just hasn't been able to put them away. Today she did."

The score remained the same until the 64th minute, when Jennie Gorwitz knotted the game at 1-1. She settled a long pass and finished just inside the far post for her seventh goal of the season. Gorwitz then set up Stephanie Gross' seventh tally of the year in the 77th minute to give UW-Green Bay the 2-1 lead.

Just 19 seconds later, Faude picked up her second marker of the match, tying the game off an assist from sophomore Beth Steuer. UWM took the kick off down the near side. Steuer then sent a diagonal ball to Faude at far post, where she poked the ball into the net from six yards out.

"The maturity on this team showed after they scored their second goal," Faude said. "It's easy for a team to hang their heads after a goal like that, but we were able to come right back and tie the game."

The Panthers controlled momentum throughout the game, not allowing many dangerous chances outside the two Phoenix goals. They outshot their visitors 28-6 and forced six more corner kicks (8-2). Phoenix keeper Brooke Wikgren was called on to make 10 saves, while the UWGB defense added a team save in the 71st minute.

On that team save, Steuer found Powell at the far post on a near-side corner kick. Powell's header appeared to be heading inside the post, but a Phoenix defender was able to clear the ball to safety.

Kane made one save on the night for Milwaukee.

UWM generated a number of scoring opportunities in the first half, taking 14 shots in the frame, putting nine on goal.

Faude led the team with two goals, while Severson and sophomore Jodi Klagos each took seven shots for the match. Six of Severson's seven attempts were on frame, while the team combined for 14 shots on goal.

Milwaukee has little rest, as it will now head to Northeast Ohio to take on Youngstown State Friday and Cleveland State Sunday. The Panthers and Penguins kick off at 3 p.m. central time in Youngstown on Friday, while Sunday's game has an 11 a.m. start time in Cleveland.
